9: The Final Leg
In the last blog, we reported (to the dogs disgust) that they'd had a full trim, wash and brush up. Nick has been feeling a little left out and we can't have that so we find a friendly barber. Following a rather alarming flame-throwing display - presumably to sterilize the equipment, he's soon looking dapper again! Visits to barbers shops in dubious locations seems to be a bit of a theme for us, Janette has sat and watched the routine in a good variety of countries now; naked

8: A Brush With The Law!
The road out of Taghazout hugs the coastline and not long into our journey we come across an area of sand dunes. Intrigued, we stop to take a look. The area is home to the Timlalin Dunes - a 900 ha area which has been designated a Site of Biological and Ecological Interest for its flora and fauna. While there, we're treated to a closeup sighting of the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis which is all but extinct everywhere but here and the Souss Massa National Park. The

7: Colours and Contrasts
Before we head off to Tiznit, Nick decides to take Millie on a walk - or rather, some fairly serious rock climbing! Known as 'The Surfboard' - a huge granite rock platform sticks horizontally out into thin air. At about 200 metres high - this is definitely not something for the faint-hearted! Some of the rocks in this area have names - there is the Golden Lion and the Rabbits. We have really liked Tafraoute, a place where we could easily have lingered. We have one more visit

6: Uncharted Territory!
We're heading a short distance from Icht, to the village of Amtoudi, it's a tiny and unremarkable place save for the fact that it boasts not one but two Amazigh agadirs - fortified granaries used to store food, water and valuables. As is so often the case in Morocco, as we drive along we are amazed by the spectacular rock formations. The ever-changing landscapes have inspired us to watch the TV series 'Earth' on BBC iPlayer in the evenings to help to try to understand how the

5: Surviving the Sand & Heat!
Now we're talking! As a birthday treat for Janette, Nick has come up trumps and booked us in to a lovely riad for the night just outside Zagora in a village called Amazraou. This is a lovely place, peaceful and surrounded by a beautiful garden and beyond that a palm grove. We all, dogs included, have a lovely time lolling about in the sunshine in the garden. The weather is warm and sunny and we enjoy lunch on the patio and they serve Moroccan wine, what's not to like?! We the

4: Morocco's Famous Green Ceramics
Erg Chebbi - and the Auberge campsite in particular is such a special place we don't understand why it isn't busier. There are a few other vans here but we and Bernd are by ourselves in prime position. The dogs like it too! Last time we were here we didn't explore the small town of Merzouga and it seems a shame not to visit it this time, so out come the bikes and off we set. There are a couple of tourist shops here but it's a very soft sell. We wander the main street browsing

3: Next Stop - The Sahara Desert!
The next leg of our journey is a familiar one; the landscape flattens out and the dunes of Erg Chebbi come into view. Last time here the sight of dunes like this was a first for both of us and it was a jaw dropping sight. Since then we've seen other, bigger and more extensive dunes than those of this part of the Sahara but this desert will always have a special place in our hearts and its splendour remains undeniable. We stop for a coffee and admire a luxury hotel that we wo

2: The Long Way Round
Most people travelling by ferry to Morocco disembark at Tanger Med port. We would have done this too as we did last time, but for the fact that we couldn't get dog-friendly accommodation on the Portsmouth - Santander ferry. We could have arrived in Nador and nipped westwards along the Mediterranean coast to join one of the popular routes south via Chefchaouen & Fez but we did that route last time, so decide to take the opportunity Nador presents us with to travel down the eas

1: Morocco Revisited!
So, once again we're looking for a respite from the long, cold English winter and Morocco is in our sights once more. This will be our second trip, but we left Morocco last time with so much more we wanted to see and we don't feel this will simply be a re-run of our previous journey. If you want to travel on the Portsmouth - Santander ferry with dogs you have to book tickets way in advance and we've missed the moment for that. We decide to take the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry and

12: The Final Countdown!
We’re on the road home now but that doesn’t mean the adventure is over quite yet. The first big event is Nick’s birthday……. and he’s twenty-one again! As a surprise, Janette books a posh room at Palm Afrique Lodge. Knowing how much Nick loves a soak in the bath, Janette makes sure the room has a tub and by the time Nick has had a good, long soak and got rid of the last two months worth of ingrained dust he’s barely recognisable! This morning we need to prepare to cross back

9: The Mighty Zambezi!
Our friends Janet and Chris are due to arrive later today, so we have the day to explore. The Victoria Falls National Park has been recommended to us by a Zimbabwean chap we met at Robins Camp and so we decide to give it a go. Much of the Park runs along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River above the Falls; the river here is very wide and very, very fast flowing. Dotted along the river bank are picnic stops - this tickles us as there are strict rules forbidding people from g

7: Tales Of The Riverbank
This weeks blog has had a very watery theme,as we've spent time in the Okavango Panhandle area in the north of Botswana; on the shores of the Kavango River (they don't use the 'O' in Namibia) and on the banks of the Zambezi looking across from Namibia to Zambia. Last weeks blog saw us bidding farewell to Claire and Jonathan. We stayed on at Drotsky's Campsite and explored the local area for a few more days. This area is less busy with tourists than the Delta in the south, but
